About Us

Peterborough Litter Wombles was formed in 2021 by a group of Keep Britain Tidy #Litterheroes who were concerned about the build-up of litter and fly-tipping in and around Peterborough. Since then we have collected thousands of bags of rubbish, much of it from woodland areas and pathways where it had been accumulating for years. We actively work with other volunteer groups, Peterborough City Council and Aragon Direct Services to clean up our city.

We are passionate about empowering our communities to take action to clean up our city for us all to enjoy.

Our Aims

The purpose of Peterborough Litter Wombles is to clean up Peterborough. This means all of the territory controlled by Peterborough City Council – streets, pathways, parks, vegetation, river banks and perhaps even highways and industrial estates in due course.

We work with anyone and everyone to achieve this. All of us share one environment, whatever our political persuasion, religion, ethnicity, age, or level of ability. In particular we work closely with the council, the police and other agencies and volunteer groups. We carry out litter picks ourselves as well as helping others to do the same by providing equipment, information, encouragement and a forum where people can communicate with each other. We run corporate social responsibility (CSR) events for a growing number of local businesses.

As the backlog of historical litter is cleared, prevention becomes increasingly important. We will work with the council to promote, amongst other things, better enforcement, engagement with communities, education and placement of bins.

We are part of a wider litter picking community across the UK. We will learn from what others do well, and share what we know with others. In this way we will contribute to spreading best practice beyond Peterborough and across the whole of the UK.

Our committee

Our committee members are all unpaid volunteers and are responsible for managing the group which includes organising events, networking with other voluntary groups, working with the local authority and businesses, fundraising etc.

Please note we do have day jobs, so if you get in touch we will respond to you as soon as possible!
